To ensure your journey through the “Land of a Thousand Hills” is as seamless as possible, Bahali Travel has compiled this essential guide. Rwanda is one of the safest and most organized countries in Africa, but it has specific laws that every visitor must respect.
1. Entry & Visas (German Citizens)
- Visa on Arrival: Citizens of Germany (as well as all EU countries) can obtain a 30-day tourist visa upon arrival at Kigali International Airport for $50 USD.
- East Africa Tourist Visa: If you plan to visit Kenya or Uganda on the same trip, you can apply for a 90-day multi-country visa for $100 USD.
- Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the day you enter Rwanda.
2. Health & Safety
- Mandatory Insurance: As of 2026, proof of travel health insurance is mandatory for all tourists entering Rwanda.
- Vaccinations: A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country where Yellow Fever is endemic. We also strongly recommend malaria prophylaxis, especially if visiting Akagera National Park.
- Drinking Water: Tap water is not safe for drinking. Stick to bottled or boiled water, which is readily available at all hotels and lodges.
3. The “Plastic Bag Ban”
Rwanda is one of the cleanest countries in the world because non-biodegradable plastic bags are illegal.
- Airport Check: Your luggage may be searched at the airport. Any plastic “Ziploc” or shopping bags will be confiscated.
- Bahali Tip: Use reusable cloth bags or “dry bags” for your gear and toiletries.
4. Cultural Etiquette & “Umuganda”
- Umuganda: On the last Saturday of every month (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM), all Rwandans participate in nationwide community service. Most businesses close, and transport is restricted. If your tour coincides with this day, Bahali Travel will adjust your schedule to ensure a smooth transition.
- Photography: Always ask for permission before taking photos of people. Photography of military buildings, government offices, or border crossings is strictly forbidden.
- Social Conduct: Rwandans are polite and modest. It is best to avoid loud public displays and to dress modestly, especially when visiting rural areas or memorials.
5. Money & Tipping
- Currency: The local currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). While USD is accepted for permits and large hotel bills, we recommend using RWF for local markets and tips.
- Payments: Credit cards are accepted in major hotels in Kigali, but Mobile Money (Momo) is the most common way to pay locally.
- Tipping: Tipping is not mandatory but highly appreciated.
- Drivers/Guides: $10–$15 per person, per day.
- Gorilla Trackers/Rangers: $5–$10 per person.
- Porters: $5–$10 (in addition to their hiring fee).
6. Drone Laws
If you are a photographer wanting to bring a drone:
- Strict Regulation: You must register your drone with the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA) weeks before arrival.
- No-Fly Zones: Drones are strictly prohibited in National Parks unless you have a special commercial permit.
